Abstract: In the Fauna Regni Hungariae, published in 1899, S. Mocsáry listed 9 stonefly species from the present territory of Hungary; I have marked them by a + in the present enumeration. This meagre number of species also implied that the state of exploration of the group was very low at the turn of the century. However, we should bear it in mind that Hungary as it exist at that time had much more, and for the stoneflies also extremly more favourable, habitats, especially with respect to the higher river valleys and springs in the North and in Transylvania,-regions wich were thereforee better explored. This is substantianed by the fact that there were 25 Plecoptera species listed from the entire Carpathian Basin. S. Pongrácz published a list in 1914, completing our home Plecoptera fauna by further species. In this paper, he listed 16 species from the present area of Hungary (indicated by an o below). His material from the Carpathian Basin is rather substantial, with a great number of data especially from the Comitats Máramaros and Csík, from the environs of the mining towns in the North, from the Tatra and the Retyezát Massif, the Szeben and Radna Ranges, and near Trencsén; 73 stonefly species had been shown from the Carpathian Basin. In the years that followed, and until quite recently, no other "stonefly" paper was published by Hungarian students, and the group was mentioned only noncommittally, treated usually as smaller materials collected concurrently with other, larger groups. Despite this, some collections were still made, but this material (except for a fragmentary portion) had been annihilated by fire in 1956. The rest was worked up by J. Aubert, and also discussed in a smaller paper. These latter data are marked by an x. The present author began the laying of the foundations of the Plecoptera Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in the last few years, but the material collected up to now needs further, substantial completion for years to come. However, the publication of the data of the new collection will continously be made in the near future.
