Abstract: The biology of the sawfly Tenthredo costata Klug, common in the East-Mediterranean, was studied for the first time. Egg laying and development of the larvae occured on Chondrilla juncea L. and C. ramosissima Sibht. at Sm. (Compositae). An average of 1-2 eggs, with a maximum of up to 14, were laid per leaf. The incubation period lasted for 8-9 days. The larvae wich are described have 5 instars (4 feeding instars, 1 pre-spinning). No egg parasites were found. However, old larvae were parasited by Priopoda strictia (F.), Ichneumonidae, and one Tachinid species at a rate of 30-40%. T. costata might be of value as biocontrol agent against C. juncea in Australia.
