Abstract: Author discusses the 46 Aleocharinae species described by Scheerpeltz, the holotypes of which are preserved in the Hungarian Natural history Museum. He confirms or establishes the following: 26 valid species are recognised as synonyms. Atheta iteratus (sic!) Blackwelder, 1944, is an unnecessary new name. Parahydrosmecta Scheerpeltz and Andinostiba Scheerpeltz are redescribed and raised to full generic rank from their former status as subgenera of Atheta Thomson. The new genus Neocalodera is described and illustrated, based on Bolithochara arcuata Fauvel; it is related to Spanioda Blackwelder. The elegans Scheerpeltz; it is related to Gastorhopalus Solier. Four new species are added. The aedagus and/or the spermatheca of all valid species are illustrated for the first time.
