Title: Overwintering ecology of Haplothrips tritici Kurdjumov, 1913 (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) in central Spain

Abstract: Between August und March, pits (30 cm deep) were excavated in plots, where the former crop was wheat, whit different cultivation treatments (fallow, cultivator, mouldboard ploughing and no tillage) to determine the vertical distribution of wheat thrips and natural mortality under the conditions of central Spain, and how cultivations affect them. A soil sampling method was developed, suitable for the hard, dry soils of cereal fields. Since November over 70% of the thrips population were found in the stubble in the fallow plot. The dry conditions in summer were an important limiting factor of larvae populations. Only the ploughing treatment changed significantly the vertical distribution of larval populations in the soil. Ploughing effects on mortality are discussed.
