Abstract: Sixteen isolates of entomogenus fungi, belonging to 4 species were tested as potential biocontrol agents against the onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, and the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). Verticillium lecanii, Beauveria bassiana, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and Metarhizium anisopliae, were isolated from dead insects and from soil, in Israel, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Russia and the USA. In general, the onion thrips was more susceptible to all fungi tested than the western flower thrips. P. fumosoroseus, B. bassiana and one isolate of M. anisopliae showed the highest virulence towards both thrips species. In test for heat tolerance B. bassiana and M. anisopliaewere found to better adapted than the other species. A bioassay procedure developed for this study is described. A Fusarium sp. was isolated and recognized as one of two factors of thrips mortality in uninoculated controls. This isolate was also tested for virulence.
