Abstract: Thysanoptera were studied in Ötztaler Alpen, Austria, in the upper parts of the valley of the Ötztaler Ache brook. At elevations of 1850-3450 m, 35 species were ascertained. In four altitudinal levels, the number of species decreased from 35, to 24, 7 and to only 2. Occurence of thrips species was strictly limited by the presence of their food plants. Catch size decreased with rising height, being 56.6, 36.4, 8.6 and 6.0 individuals per sample. The proportion of flightless species increased from 46 and 42 to 71 and 100%. Seven dominant species amounted 82.8% out of total 3696 collected adult individuals. On rich high alpine meadows, Apterothrips secticornis was the only characteristic cosmopolitan, boreo-montane form. Aptinothrips rufus and A. stylifer (7x more abundant) reached in the nival zone of Alps.Journal: Folia entomologica hungaricaJournal abbreviation: Folia ent. hung.ISSN: 0373-9465Publisher: , Editor(s): Mahunka, S.
