Abstract: Carabid fauna of the Ménes-völgy (valley) and the higher plateau of the Aggteleki-karszt was studied in the Northern Hungarian Mountains by using pitfall traps. Carabid communities of the stream valley and the higher karst plateau can be definitely separated by cluster analysis. It can be explained with the fact that several hygrophilous (e.g., Pterostichus anthracinus, P. nigrita), mountainous (Cychrus caraboides, Licinus hoffmannseggi, Cymindis cingulata) and Carpathian carabid species (Carabus obsoletus, Trichotichnus laevicollis carpathicus, Abax schueppeli) can be found in the stream valley, because of its cool, humid microclimate. On the higher plateau no optimal conditions can be found for these carabids. This fact proves the unique biogeographical feature of the stream valley. We proved the occurrence of Cymindiscingulata in the Ménes-völgy, which is a new species in the Hungarian fauna.
