Abstract: Beginning with the fifties of the present century an increased variety of control measures against insect pests became available. Experiments with nuclear radiation as one of these measures has significant results beyond the economic advantage gained by eradication of screw worm from large regions in the United States. They prompted investigations, necessary for the proper application of radiation techniques, into insect physiology, ecology and ethology.
