Abstract: Beginning with the fifties of the present century an increased variety of control measures against insect pests became available. Experiments with nuclear radiation as one of these measures has significant results beyond the economic advantage gained by eradication of screw worm from large regions in the United States. They prompted investigations, necessary for the proper application of radiation techniques, into insect physiology, ecology and ethology. Although it is unlikely that the sterile male technique - would be completely successful over a wide range of insect pests, favourable results against even a few important ones would be of great value, allowing diminishing application of chemical substances and the evolution of integrated plant protection.
