Abstract: The utilization of insect diseases in the biological control of insect pests is not a new idea; nevertheless, the practical use of insect pathogens has yielded outstanding results only during the last twenty years. The present paper discusses the possibilities of microbial control of insect pests and evaluates the various groups of insect pathogens from this point of view. Special attention is given to insect viruses which are able to suppress pest populations under natural conditions and to Bacillus thuringiensis, a pathogen of lepidopterous pests.
