Abstract: Leeuewnhoek (1632-1723) was the most outstanding student of microscopy in the seventeenth century. A self-educated man, he was a textile trader who as a hobby manufactured and ground his own lenses. His microscopes were far better than those of his contemporaries, and it was he who discovered the world of microscopic organisms. He was to the first to observe and draw attention to the free-living and parasitic protozoa and bacteria. Thus he became the founder of protozoology and bacteriology. He was elected member of the Royal Society and the Academy of Sciences of France. Leeuewnhoek’s collected papers appeared in Dutch between 1685 and 1718, in Latin between 1702 and 1722.
