Abstract: Three different tests for toxoplasma antibodies, anti - IgGAM immunofluorescence (IFA - IgGAM), anti - IgM immunofluorescence (IFA - IgM) and complement fixation (KKR) tests were comparatively studied in serum samples from 315 persons presenting neurological, ophthalmological and other symptoms suspected or characteristic to toxoplasmosis. A micromethod on teflon-coated, multi-spot slides adapted for the immunofluorescent assay is described. The first screening was performed in every case by KKR and IFA - IgGAM. Percentages of positive results were 31.7% for the KKR test (titres ≥ 1:10) and 48.9% for the IgGAM test (titres ≥ 1:20). Re-examination of 62 patients by IFA-IgM, where the symptoms seemed to be characteristic for toxoplasmosis confirmed the presence of IgM antibodies in 36 cases ( titres ≥ 1:20). In 14 cases where the consecutive IFA-IgGAM and KKR reactions resulted significant rise in titres, the IgM antibody level was found to be higher than 1:100, up to 1: 4000. An IgGAM level of 1:2000 or greater, and an IgM level of 1:100 or greater together with clinical signs might indicate recent active infection. The complement fixing antibodies varied from 1:10 to 1: 5120 in the course of active disease. Keywords: toxoplasmosis, serodiagnosis, micromethod, IFA-IgGAM, IFA-IgM, CFT (KKR), subspecies
