Abstract: A review is given of the medical and veterinary significance of the genus Gasterophilus. The earliest references in both ancient literature and scientific publications are discussed. The causalistics of various species of the family Gasterophilidae is analysed and the etymology of gasterophilosis in the Hungarian language is described.
