Title: Study of the larvicidal effect of Strongid Plus (Pfizer) in sports horse studs affected with Gasterophilus intestinalis infection of unknown severity

Abstract: A total of 162 Nonius, Hungarian half-blood and Gidran sports stud horses were examined. In the three experimental studs the severity of infection by Gasterophilus larvae was unknown, but the numbers of G. intestinalis eggs excreted by horses of the different studs in the previous year were known. The experimental animals were treated with a Strongid Plus (Pfizer) preparation containing pyrantel pamoate and trichlorfon at a dose of 1 ml/10 kg body mass. After treatment, 5173 spontaneously excreted faecal samples were examined for the presence of larvae at 2-h intervals for 3 days. The drug resulted in the excretion of a total of 3022 3rd-stage (L3) and 194 2nd-stage (L2) G. intestinalis larvae. Most expressed larval excretion occurred between the 22nd and 52nd h of study. Side effects included expressed flatulation in 51.2 %, diarrhoea in 11.7 %, and colicky symptoms in 1.3 % of the treated horses; only horses with colicky symptoms required medicinal treatment.
