Abstract: Losses caused by flies have long been a permanent problem in Hungarian animal production. Certain management technologies (e.g. battery keeping), increased animal density, and poor hygienic conditions result in severe fly infestation. The prevention of losses and efficient fly control are hindered by incorrect attitude (underestimation of the role of flies) and organizational facts (the present practice of licensing insecticides). This paper outlines the Hungarian history of fly control during the past 46 years (the chemicals used and the resistance developing to them: DDT, organochlorine and organophosphate insecticides, pyrethroids, etc.). The preparations introduced in the practice in 1989 for destruction of larvae and imagoes and as repellents are listed in a table. The paper also contains the standpoint adopted by the Hungarian Society of Parasitologists on fly control (also in English).
