Abstract: Sixteen house fly populations collected from animal farms in Hungary in 1990 were tested in 24 hour topical bioassays for resistance against different type of adulticide insecticides including DDT, lindane (organochlorines), trichlorfon, propetamphos (organophosphates), propoxur (carbamate), permethrin and deltamethrin (pyrethroids). Resistance to DDT and trichlorfon was extensive and considerably high, however in the case of two other insecticides belonging to the same insecticide groups, lindane and propetamphos, the resistance ratios were low (R/S value < 10). The sensitivity of the collected populations to pyrethroids greatly varied and there were a few highly resistant populations (R/S value >40). Correlation analysis has revealed a high degree of positive cross-correlation among lindane, propetamphos, permethrin and deltamethrin, thus, resistance to one adulticide conferred resistance to all other adulticides analysed. The existence of variability in the response of house fly populations to adulticides and the cross-correlations found among them suggest that resistance management, including the application of negatively cross-correlated insecticides, combinations and rotations, is needed.
