Abstract: Author analyzed the variations and correlations of some morphological characters (cranial and body measurements) in 5 populations of the fieldvole (Microtus arvalis (Pall.)) from different parts of Hungary. Author considered the differences between the examined populations as the result of the well-known fact that following the breakdown of a gradation, great territories become depopulated and occupied again only by a small number of 'founder' animals from these reserve areas. During the arising of such populations genetic drift often changes the characteristical features of the small founder group in a single way.
