Abstract: Zoogeographical investigations have been carried out on a small-mammal collection consisting of 1270 specimens belonging to 28 species from 9 different localities of the Carpathian basin. The comparative morphological and ecological studies resulted in some modifications of the microsystematics of small-mammal species as well as the changes proceeded during and after the glacial periods. The great faunogenetical importance of the Alpin-Carpathian refugian and dispersal centres has been revealed.
There is a strong correlation between the geohistory of the investigated region and the ecological valencies, stenotypic characters and the evolution of the small-mammal species and subspecies. All of these taxa may be used as bioindicators.Subject: zoology
