Abstract: Frogs differ from all other vertebrates in having a protrusile tongue that rotetes around the symphysis so that its posteriormost tip ends up in the most extended position when it impacts on prey. There is not one tongue propulsion system, but several. The system is of interest in two ways. First, in the tounge we find a set of muscle fibers, the architecture of which may furnish cues regarding phylogenetic arrangements. Second, the muscles in question both induce movements and serve as skeletal supportive elements.
