Abstract: Paleontological material discloses the general pattern of amphibian and reptilian evolution and enables one to assess their changing role in the economics of nature. In contrary to widely accepted ideas, the evolution of amphibians and reptiles was not connected with climatic changes in the direction of aridization. The phylogenetic homogeniety of Lissamphibians is questionable. The otic connection of the palato-quadrate complex was acquired by reptiles quite independently from amphibians. The eardrum was probably independently acquired by sauropsid and therapsid reptiles. The pattern of geographic distribution of amphibians and reptiles in the Paleozoic reflects in many respects the intensity of paleontological study of the various deposits in the different continents.Subject: zoology
