Abstract: Populations of Vipera berus inhabiting the Central Plateau of Moldavia differ clearly from those of the Eastern Carpathians in a number of morphological characters (size, colour, pattern, head shield). The morphological characters of a third group of populations originating from South Transylvania do not seem to be influenced by altitudinal differences in the locality.
