Abstract: Fifty three skull and twelve external measurements were taken from a pilot sample of the three closely related species Apodemus sylvaticus, A. flavicollis and A. microps. Univariate analyses, ???estamination of weighted entropy of the characters, and multivariate analyses including ordination methods and discriminant analyses were carried out to find the most suitable combination of characters for identification of the species. The distance between the incisor and the third molar was found to be character which accounted for most of the variation in the three-species sample, but the most parsimonious identification may be achieved by using the classification functions obtained for three mandible measurements.Subject: zoology
