Abstract: Fish and amphibian communities were investigated in a floodplain area of the river Danube near Vienna in the years 1993 and 1994. Several backwater types were distinguished, typical fish- and amphibian communities are described. The importance of habitat structure for the coexistence of both groups is discussed, the results are compared with recent publications.
