Abstract: Until 1877, Hungarian botany had no periodicals of its own. Á. Kanitz (1843-1896) was the first to undertake, for the rapidly advancing Hungarian botany, the publication of the "Magyar Növénytani Lapok" (Hungarian Botanical Review), thus strenghtening connections between scientists and amateurs. He was editor as well as publisher of the periodical. Subscribers, however, were scarce and the periodical run into debt. Volume 16 was never completed owing to financial reasons. The publication of the journal for one and a half decades brought Hungarian botany on the upswing.Subject: botany
