Abstract: The developing or desorganizing process of lichen thalli can be more exactly traced by anatomical investigations. The apical and lower parts of the thalli and podetia in young, well developed and adult specimens of Cladonia furcata, Cladonia magyarica, Cladonia convoluta and Parmelia pokornyi have been studied. The layers vary quantitatively and qualitatively per season. Least varying is the cortex while the medulla fluctuates extensively. Growth and desorganization of the layers appear not at identical periods in the species. Desorganization begins generally in the thallic base, excepting Cladonia magyarica in which the apical part of the podetium desorganizes first in every developmental stage of the plant.
