Abstract: A numerical taxonomic investigation based on 29 morphological characters of 430 individuals of 7 Scilla population-groups grown in natural habitats in Hungary was carried out. Two multivariate methods, sum of square clustering and principal component analyses as well as 2 new Hungarian techniques, SCAGA and MULTISCA, were used to study the variation among populations. The methods revealed three distinct aggregates in Hungary according to their ploidy-level: diploid 2n = 18 (S. vindobonensis and S. kladnii); tetraploid 2n = 36 (S. drunensis) and hexaploid 2n = 54 (S. spetana). By this methods the infraspecific taxa can be separated as well, and legitimated the taxonomic value of the hexaploid population as a new species. Keywords: biostatistical methods, new taxa for the Hungarian flora, Scilla, taxonomic revision
