Abstract: This paper summarises the Sphagnum occurrences of die Zemplén Mts. The authors mapped these, revised the collection material from this area and compared the old and new data. Nine Sphagnum occurrences were described from the mountains earlier, of which 6 locations still exist, and 10 new occurrences were identified. Earlier 5 species of peatmoss were collected from this area but recent studies have proven the presence of 14 species, of which 9 are new for the Zemplén Mts and one is new for Hungary. Four groups of habitats were established according to decreasing moisture: peat accumulating fens, Sphagnum occurrences along springs, streams and in other wet habitats, Sphagnum occurrences on moist roadside embankments and in temporarily wet places with occasional runoff, and Sphagnum occurrences in forest.
