Abstract: A total of 222 bryophyte taxa (37 liverworts and 185 mosses) were recorded during our
field trip to the Jablanica Mts. Twenty-six species (8 liverworts and 18 mosses) regionally threatened
in the Balkans, or even in Europe, were found in the investigated area. The most important
habitat types for nature conservation are the limestone and siliceous grasslands in the alpine zones
and bogs and water-source areas, which seem to be severely affected by climate warming, but still
maintain a very diverse bryophyte flora with many threatened species including several arctic-alpine,
subarctic-subalpine, and boreal, montane taxa. In the beech forest at high elevations some
other threatened montane species occur. Keywords: liverworts, mosses, the Balkans, species of conservation interest
