Abstract: With the development of artificial intelligence and the trend towards automation of various subtasks, there is a need to automate microscopic plankton species identification. Some solutions already exist with relatively modest capabilities. This study examines the results hitherto achieved in this area, the potential goals to be achieved and the way how current AI systems can be applied to this task.
